What Causes Sudden Bleeding From Rectum?

Went to bathroom, thought I had to urinate, did but then I passed a stream of blood from the rectum. I am a 72 year old married female. Dr office is closed for the day. Just wondered if there was something I could do before getting a hold of Dr in the morning.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted your history of going to bathroom, thought you had to urinate, did but then you passed a stream of blood from the rectum. You are a 72 year old married female. Dr office is closed for the day. Just wondered if there was something you could do before getting a hold of Dr in the morning.

This indicates that you most probably have one of the following problems:
Hemorrhoids
Polyp

I would advise you to visit a Doctor at the ER or in the nearby Hospital to get a proctoscopy and per-rectal examination as you may need a ligature or a small procedure to be done to stop the bleeding and be under observation.
An opinion of a General Surgeon will help you to get a definite diagnosis and treatment later on.

I find this answer helpful
