Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Sudden Death After Quadruple Bypass Surgery?
My forty three year old friend had quadruple bypass surgery. After nine weeks of surgery, he died while jogging. We think he died before he hit the ground. He was in middle of a run. We are not sure what happened. could it have been a blood clot?
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns. Your friend had Sudden cardiac death (SCD). Most likely he had sustained VT(ventricular tachycardia), which rapidly degenerated into VF (ventricular fibrillation) and cardiac arrest before emergency help could arrive. The most common electrical mechanism for cardiac arrest is ventricular fibrillation (VF), which is responsible for 50–80% of cardiac arrests. Severe persistent bradyarrhythmias, asystole, and pulseless electrical activity formerly called electromechanical dissociation (EMD)] cause another 20–30%. Another possibility of mode of sudden death in a setting of CAD (coronary artery disease) is cardiac rupture leading to hemopericardium ,as your friend died suddenly while jogging.
