What Causes Sudden Decrease In WBC Count In Child?
What would cause a dramatic decrease in wbc in a 2 year old. My grandson has been sick with fevers off & on for the past 10 days up to 104 during at different times of night & day. He has had a cough for 2 days but normal cxr, normal urine culture, normal ear drums. Friday night he was back in ED because he was having difficulty breathing. He had an ear infection & an xray of the neck showed that his adenoids were very large. His pcp stated that his last labs showed dramatic decrease in his white blood cell count & is wanting him to come back in by the end of the week to do more blood work. So my question is: What would cause a dramatic decrease in the wbcs?
I think he could get further evaluated. The cause of decrease may be a viral infection or even any malignancy. He should do a total blood count with formula and get an overall evaluation. Also a bone marrow may be needed.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
