I am 48 year old male never had health issues. In the last 3 months my blood pressure has gone from normal to an average of 158/105 checked about 20 times a week over the last 2 weeks. I dont have a doctor never have check up. I know I must go soon . Should I go to a GP or a heart doctor?

Hello,

Welcome to Health Care Magic.
Thanks for writing.

I am Dr.Saddiq-ul-Abidin. I have read your question completely, i understand your concern and will try to help you in best way possible.

As far as sudden elevation in blood pressure is concerned it usually doesn't happen , it is a gradual process but sometimes the patient doesn't feel till till it was risen above 160-170 systolic. This probably happened with you too.
The other possibility is that , there are some mechanisms of BP control in body which keep compensating the BP but there comes a time when it can't be compensated completely , in this case the blood pressure rises.
You are definitely right in thinking that you should visit a doctor soon , and with this Blood pressure reading i would say, first you should visit a GP , get your cholesterol levels and other check-ups done then if the GP suggest then go to a cardiologist.

There are certain things which you yourself can do about your BP:

1) Reduce weight.(For every pound of weight reduced BP goes down by an average of 1 mmHg).
2)Stop smoking if you do.
3) Eat healthy food leave saturated fats and witch to unsaturated ones and that too in low quantity.
4) Check your salt intake.
5) Get physically active there should be some physical activity daily.
6) Try to stay calm and not to get overwhelmed by your mental stresses.

This blood pressure reading is not at very high side and you can easily control it from here. But it does need attention.

I hope this answered your question. If you have more queries I am happy to answer.Otherwise rate and close the discussion
