My mom is 75 recently she has these spells where she has a feelings that start at her feet as it creeps up she becomes over whelmed, scared, then a realization she exists, then she said she s not in her body, her eyes see nothing, her ears hears nothing and her mind is black and blank. Then for a couple of minutes she has checked out. Then in a little while she back in her head. She remembers nothing. She said she didn t feel bad, there was no pain, no numbness, she hasn t changed meds. And all her vital where good. No signs of strokes or heart attack. Luckily there has been someone with her when these attack occur. Thank you for your time.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It might be related to a problem with the blood vessels that supply the part of the brain responsible for processing the visual information. This is the occipital cortex and it is supplied from vertebrobasilar arteries.

These symptoms you describe can be a result of an obstruction of blood flow due to compression of a vertebral artery and this will decrease the blood supply for these specific areas of the brain.

This can be a mechanical compression and the compression might be present in a specific position of the head depending on what is causing the compression.

The most common causes are vertebral problems like cervical bone spurs, bony malformations, disk rupture, abnormal muscle insertions, arthritis and dislocations.

You should consult a physician as soon as possible and get examined. You may need to run some tests like:

-Transcranial Doppler
-magnetic resonance angiography

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
