What Causes Sudden Fractured 2nd Metatarsal With No Apparent Reason?

Hi, Why would i get a fractured 2nd metatarsal for no apparant reason? I am a 34yr old male, I had been doing no sporting activities ie. running or football. I woke one morning with severe pain and swelling (no bruising or marking) and was initially treated for Gout by my GP. Only an xray 6 weeks later shows the fracture.
