What Causes Sudden Kidney Failure?

My dUGHTER HAS BEN HOSPITALIZED FOR A WEEK WITH kidney failure. She is P-anca + and on dialysis for 3 1/2 hours as of today. No one can tell me how this happened. She is 52, a non-drug taker, uses dilantin for seizure prevention after an avm surgery when she was 21. How did this happen? She was fine and now flat on her back on dialysis.

Hi,

Thanks for your question.
Sorry to read about your daughter's ailment.
After going through your question there is likely possibility of vasculitis in your daughter's case.
PANCA is a type of antibodies detected in particular form of vasculitis.
Vasculitis is disease of blood vessels.
It occurs due to auto-immunity.
Auto immunity means our own immune system get activated against our own body tissues and start destroying it.

In PANCA vasculitis there is involvement of small blood vessels of kidney (tuft of capillaries in glomeruli) called glomerulonephritis.
Which is responsible for deterioration of kidney function leading to retention of toxic substances in body which may require dialysis.

In such a cases detailed physical examination laboratory evaluation is important.

Use of immuno-suppressant medicines may help.
Follow nephrologist.

Hope this help.
