What Causes Sudden Loss Of Balance While Walking In The Elderly?

I am a healthy male 58, sudden onset of loss of equilibrium with walking, tend to lean to the right. unable to write as well with my right hand. Onset 2 weeks ago with new eyeglass prescription. today went in and rechecked and prescrip is right for my eyes. The problem is something else. No stroke s/s facial droop or sway to arms with standing and holding arms out. When I touch finger to nose the right hand touches just above the lip while left hand goes directly to tip of nose. I have no sit to stand dizzyness, it only occurs while ambulating.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Issues with the inner ear are the most common reasons for vertigo though it can occur with changes involving certain parts of the brain as well.

Inner ear causes include BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo), Meniere's disease and vestibular neuronitis.

These are all benign (not life-threatening) conditions but if the symptoms continue, then you should be seen.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
