Hi there, my 20 yr old daughter, has never had a nose bleed before, till tonight. She was sitting in a rink waiting for a hockey game to start and her nose just started gushing out of both nostrils. I asked her how she was feeling prior to this event and she said she felt fine. She told me it bled for about 20 minutes. Just wondering Dr, what would have or could have caused this to happen?? She is a smoker but has kind of been coughing with a cold the last couple of days, so she says she has smoked. She was not coughing, sneezing or even feeling ill before the nose bleed started. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Sheila
Hi, Welcome to healthcare magic. I had gone through your question. I can understand your concern. Smoking causes congestion of nasal mucosa. During common cold the mucosa will be congested . The smoking during cold would be caused more damage to mucosa leading to bleed. I recommend the following. 1) Avoid smoking. 2) Oral decongestant like tablet levocetrizine with phenylephrine. 3) Hemocoagulase nose drops to stop bleeding. 4)If bleeding persists consult emergency room. She will be fine. Hope I have answered your question. If you have any questions, I am happy to help. Wish her a good health and speedy recovery. Regards, Dr Paparaja S MBBS MS Consultant ENT Surgeon
