What Causes Sudden Onset Of Violence In A Child?

Dear doctor, My son a class 10 student, a very bright and promising one but he lost his seriousness to do good in everything. When we ask him to be serious or to read attentively he often becomes violent and starts beating us like a mad.Two counselling sessions with a psychologist produced no result. He has already strongly denied to go to any psychologist or psychiatrist. Please suggest us to get rid of this problem. P.K.Ghosh. Andal.

Hello,

In my opinion, since your son had already denied going to any psychologist or psychiatrist, do not force him. Compelling him to do it your way may lead to mood swings, drug/alcohol abuse or thoughts of suicide.

This is a time when you have to be very patient, caring & loving. Since he is a good student you need not worry, first let him get well, let him calm down, relax & have confidence in his family members.

The symptoms are indicative of developing ADHD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. But let him first get diagnosed, sometimes due to peer pressure, stress, hurt & anger; teenagers may show such restless, violent, impulsive behavior. With the passing of time, they may get fine & may not need any treatment.

However, since he has shown such behavior it will be better that he gets clinically assessed & investigations like CT, PET & MRI be done to stay on the safer side. If reports are positive, treatment can be started at the earliest. Don't haste, give your son time.

As a parent, you should talk openly with your son without pressurizing him for anything. Ask why he is disturbed & upset. Be supportive & accepting at all times.

Other medical conditions that may cause violent behavior are Anxiety, Stress, Abuse (physical, verbal or sexual), ADD, ADHD or Bi-polar disorders.

He may need to be treated with medications and therapy if there is no change in behavior in spite of maintaining a good family environment and loving care by the parents. If he gets out of control, get him admitted in a hospital & treated before symptoms get worse.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
