What Causes Sudden Popping In The Ear Followed By Dizziness?

I have a cold and I was blowing my nose, then my right ear popped and the room started spinning to the point where I fell over and I felt as though I was going to vomit. The dizziness stopped after 2-3 minutes but I still feel very sick. Is this serious?

Hi Dear,

welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. The symptoms like sudden popping in the ear followed by dizziness as you mention in query are pointing towards a condition known as meniere's disease , which is a disorder of middle ear . In this disorder person suffer from spontaneous vertigo ,dizziness and hearing loss . The symptoms can also occur due to eustachian tube dysfunction. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist. Doctor may order audiometery test , electronystagmography , rotary chair test and posturography to find out exact cause and to rule out cause like stroke. Doctor may prescribe antiemetic drugs to help controlling vertigo and nausea . He/she may also prescribe diuretics like frusamide to relive the extra fluid from inner ear , antibiotics if there is inner ear infection and recommend hearing aid . Surgical procedure like labyrithecotomy will also be options if other methods do not work.
