What Causes Sudden Sharp Pain In Shin With Diarrhea And Nausea?

My husband is 51 yo and is an otherwise healthy person. Last night, he began to feel nauseated with abdominal cramps. He had diarrhea last night and throughout the day today. He also had sudden pain in his wrist and both lower legs (shins). He took over the counter pain medication - wrist pain went away but pain in shins remains - he describes the pain as a constant sharp, moderate pain. The nauseated feeling has subsided but the diarrhea remains. He has some soup and clear liquids throughout the day. Do you have any suggestions?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the sharp pain in shin with diarrhea and nausea indicates possible alterations in the electrolyte levels of potassium and magnesium most likely giving myalgia issue. The primary control of diarrhea is mandatory to prevent further disturbances in the symptoms.
- Allow him plenty of liquids including boiled water, lemon juice, coconut water, rice water, mung and dal rice water, butter milk
- Prefer bland vegan diet with organic fresh fruits
- Should consume small, frequent feeds
- Addition of probiotics with lacto bacillus support for GI flora
- Analgesic tablet paracetamol ( 650 mg ) 3 times a day after meals

It is advisable to get a primary check with his physician for vital parameters and if needed he or she may guide you for need of any lab test.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
