What Causes Sudden Swelling In The Right Foot And Ankle?

all of a sudden, my right foot and ankle began to swell??? I m 74, in really good shape after dealing with 2o years ago small lacunar strokes, a stent inserted later, a HUGE LIFESTYLE change ( exercise and heart diet daily). I elevated my foot above my heart and the swelling has gone. I have the beginnngs of neuropathy in both feet (51 /2 years). i do not use salt! Why would I ALL OF A SUDDEN, have this swelling in my right foot?

Hi,

If there is swelling with redness and pain then you will need to see your doctor soon to rule out skin infection like cellulitis and in some cases need to rule out deep vein thrombosis (a Doppler ultrasound of the leg is needed in this case).

If you have only the swelling but no redness and no pain in the leg then there are a few causes of it:
- if you use Amlodipine or drugs in its class, can be the cause of it. It generally starts on one foot and extends on the other foot later
- the heart can also cause swelling in the legs if it is not pumping blood efficiently from the right side.

In the above cases without redness and pain you will need to talk to the doctor as soon as possible as well and have proper examinations and treatment adjustments.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
