What Causes Sudden Weight Gain When Diagnosed With Grade 2 Fatty Liver?

Hi Doctor, I am 30 yrs old, I was rapidly gaining wieght months ago and after taking some tests, I was diagnosed with fatty liver grade 2. H profile was negative however ALT was 99 and AST was 60. The doctor said I have NASH. For the first month I lost 5 kgs and 6 more in next month.it has been almost 2 and a half month since u have started treatment and I lost almost 13 kgs. I am 82 kgs now. However I am pretty strict In dieting, I don t consume red meat, fried food, food high in fat and sugar, pastry, sweets, rice, white bread and potato, but my Alt was elevated to 55 a few days back, while i was lowered to 26 in first month of treatment. I really don t know what s the problem. The doctor says we have reversed the fatty liver from stage 4 to stage 1 means we have done a perfect job curing the disease, but I don t know why I am not satisfied? I still take Hepa-Merz, Evion, pantoprazole and dompredon and no change in my diet. Your advise will highly be appreciated. Best Dayan

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, it's commendable the kind of improvement you have shown and life style modification and dietary restrictions are most difficult parts of treatment plan in which you have ensured promising results. Though the present ALT isn't sky-high but for reassurance viral serologies for hepatitis B and C may be needed to rule out other causes of raised liver enzymes. You can repeat the liver functions every three months. Drinking more water and keeping good hydration with fresh fruit juices may be helpful. Restriction of processed foods and continuing the same diet plan and decreasing the medical therapy and unnecessary medications may help.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Regards,
