What Causes Supraventricular Tachycardia After Taking Pantoprazole?

I have been taking pantaprazole for the past 4 months, 40 mg BID for Barrett s Esophagus. I have experienced SVT at 130 /min. rarely prior to starting the medication. The GI guy said that it was do to nerve ending that have been sensitized near the heart by the irritation of the esophagus. After taking protonix, I now get svt daily along with chest tightness and a queezy feeling in my stomac.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Long term use of Pantoprazole causes serious medical conditions like vitamin deficiencies, kidney problems, infections or fractures. In your case it looks like you are affected by vitamin B12 deficiency. You are suggested to get clinically assessed. Long term treatment with Pantoprazole causes it harder for the body to absorb vitamin B12. It causes symptoms like weakness, shortness of breath, fast heart rate, arrhythmia or supraventricular tachycardia.

If there is vitamin B12 deficiency you may have to taper & stop taking Pantoprazole. Discuss with your treating doctor so that you can be given another medicine. However, you are suggested to get a cardiac check up done, get CBC, Urinalysis, ECG, lipid function tests, echocardiography, stress tests, etc done to detect any developing CAD to stay on the safer side. Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
