What Causes Swelling And Bleeding From The Gums Of An Infant?

hi my 22 month old boy started with a fever a week ago, then we went to his doctor and said that he has canker sore. After 2 or 3days he has 2 blisters on his lips. I looked into his mouth and his gums all appeared swollen, some blood stained on his teeth. i started to brush his teeth and he started to bleed on contact with the brush, this has been going on for three days, and there is the foul smell swollen gums. is this gingivitis ?

Hi,

Your son seems to have gingivitis due to bad oral hygiene. The blisters on lips could be a. the aftermath of severe oral infection viral in origin.

If anyone in the family has cold sores (due to herpes) &it has been transmitted while kissing the baby.

The management would be

- Clean babies teeth with a soft brush & baby toothpaste twice. Wery gently without causing bleeding from gums(in case of such bleeding is your finger instead for brush).

-For gums use your fingers to massage them gently (after teeth cleaning is over). Moving your finger from up to down of gum & let the baby gargle gently.

-Inside of cheeks to be gently cleaned with fingers.

* Followed application of Botoglycerine liquid over the counter. Twice or more times a day. All over the mouth cavity.

- Do not disturb lip blisters. Just wash them. clean (no rubbing) with warm water.

* Let baby avoid sticking foods like Choco drinks like coca cola, clean his teeth after each feed with warm water &gentle rubbing with finger only. Add citrus fruits &B complex to his food.

*Take the baby to a Dentist for examination &needful prescription of oral antibiotics/antifungal as per cause of infection.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

General & Family Physician Dr. Dr. Antoneta Zotaj's  Response
Hello,

Swollen gums are due to gingivitis and bleeding can happen as the swollen gums are more fragile. it may happen in the terrain of the mouth sores and may be caused by the same possible virus.
Do gentle tooth brushing with a soft toothbrush and use mouth wash. it should improve within the next 3-4 days. If no improvement or any worsening you will need to send him to see a doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
