What Causes Swelling And Bruise On The Leg After Hitting?

Hi my name is Lori and I was shopping at the mall, when I went up to the cashiers to pay an employee had a clothes pole and dropped it on my foot. It is bruised and was swollen and my mother is a nurse and told me that it doesn't look broken but it is definently bruised and traumatized. I just got off with the insurance adjuster and she asked me if I went to the doctors and I told her no because I don't have insurance. My foot hurts when I walk on it and was wondering if you think she may have fractured a nerve or if I should ask the company to pay for a doctor to know for sure.
