What Causes Swelling And Bruising After Using A Massage Stick On The Calf?

Hi there! I'm a personal trainer/endurance sports coach in Philadelphia just doing some research from an ex client who moved but stays in touch. She's recently been training for a marathon and upping her distance weekly (this is not my program) after a run yesterday, apparently she had her friend use a massage stick on her calf, at which point the muscle became "disfugured" with indentations and then swelling and bruising. My opinion is that she had a pre-existing strain (perhaps Grade 2) and improper massage caused a rupture. At any rate...she cam to me for advice and I'm tryin to get as many opinions as possible. Thanks for your time
