What Causes Swelling And Bruising In The Leg When Diagnosed With DVT?

My son just returned from Thailand. On arriving there his ankle swelled up enormously an looked very bruised. the emergency room called it a DVT, but the ultrasound showed normal. He was given pain pills and antibiotics. He returned home 2 weeks later without any other symptoms. Two days later (yesterday) his ankle started swelling again, he was fatigued and had an increased appetite. He again had an ultrasound that showed negative. Tonight his legs are swollen and there is a rash that looks like bruising. The emergency room was unable to see him as they declared him not urgent. What could we be looking at?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms that your son is having point towards a diagnosis of DVT and needs further investigation. You should get a color Doppler done and also get his PT/INR done. Get him checked by a surgeon who will do a thorough clinical examination to assess his condition.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
