What Causes Swelling And Bruising On The Ankle After An Injury?
My husband was hit above the ankle with a line drive baseball on Saturday evening. Below the point of impact is really swollen, bruised and purple. He has been limping around on it this week. Just concerned because he had a 13 hour flight to Japan this past Monday morning (less than 48 hours after being hit) and he will be flying back to the USA on Friday. How concerned should we be about a blood clot with this?
Hello, Thanks for trusting Healthcaremagic! I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns. The symptoms you have mentioned suggestive of a hematoma. It is nothing but a collection of blood under the skin following a blunt trauma. You don't need to worry regarding this as it will subside by it own even without treatment. You can take simple analgesics like ibuprofen or diclofenac for pain. Apply ice packs over the affected area for symptomatic relief and fasten the recovery. You can also try anti inflammatory drugs like seratiopeptidase for decreasing the inflammation and to reduce the swelling. Most cases resolve in few days with these measures, if the symptoms persist despite all these take an X-ray to rule out minor fractures or contusion. Wishing you good health. Thanks
