What Causes Swelling And Discoloration Of The Varicose Veins Causing Pain?
Hi I have been on a short qflight on thursdaylast week and again on Sunday. I have just noticed that a large varicose vein which is on my left leg above the knee is rather darker than normal. I have had the varicose vein for a long time. It is nobbly and causes very little pain but on occasions is rather itchy. But I have never seen this dark colouring before. Is there a connection with the flights? What should I do ?
Long flights have a relation with Deep vein thrombosis but no relation with Superficial thrombophlebitis or inflammation of superficial veins as your symptoms suggest. It is possible that the Varicose vein you had near your knee has become thrombosed or a clot of blood has formed within it. If you do not remember any injury to the area, then it is most likely spontaneous. You should get investigated for it. What is your age and do you have any prior health problems? First, to confirm the diagnosis, you should get an Ultrasound done or a Color Doppler of that part. Then we can proceed. Meanwhile, you can apply compression with crepe bandage and also apply Heparin ointment for relief. Take care and do let me know the results. I am a Surgeon specializing in Vascular Surgery. Take care, Dr Rishi, New Delhi, India.
