What Causes Swelling And Pain Around The Left Molar Post Root Canal Procedure?

Hello Doctor, I had been having pain in my left molar... last one... for almost 2 years. One fine day my whole left side started paining and I visited the dentist. The dentist diagnosed cavity and a root canaling procedure was done. Presumably the cap which was put in was not correct, since I experienced a lot of pain. After about 2-3 months, the cap came out during a regular tooth-brushing procedure. However, there was no pain hence and so I could not visit the doctor. Now after about 8 months, I visited the doctor again as the pain increased. The doctor redid the cap and this time the cap was fixed properly as I experienced no pain post the procedure. However, she noticed that there was a swelling on the left side and gave an antibiotic dose for 5 days. The swelling subsided shortly. Now 2 months later I am experiencing pain again. Behind the cap, I can see a small swelling emerging from the gums and I can feel pain in the left side of the face. In the bottom of the left side, on frontal neck part I can feel a small swelling. In addition to this I experience difficulty in opening the mouth completely. Please advise

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of swelling and pain around the left molar post root canal procedure which could be due to presence of remnant infection, pressure on nerve due to improper placement of crown and it could be periodontal abscess. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to visit dentist again and get IOPA done and start treatment as per diagnosis. If crown is not of proper fitting get it redone. You should do mouth stretching exercises and facial muscles exercises as well. Go for quadrant scaling if there is deposits present in that area. Take proper course of antibiotics to subside infection. For now maintain proper oral hygiene and do warm saline rinses thrice a day daily .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.

Best Wishes,
