Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I am a 69 year old female Over the last couple of days I have noticed the back of my leg (behind the knee) aching and my leg swelling slightly. When I stand up it feels like I am going to fall because of weakness to that area. It is also hard to get a full extension of the leg when lying down or trying to straighten my leg. Any ideas?
If there is a previous history of pain in the joint then it is possible that the pain may be due to arthritis of the joint.
Other causes of pain include injury to the tendons, ligaments in the area. Bursitis which is inflammation of the bursa (sacs), may also cause pain as well.
Rest, warm compress to the area and anti inflammatory medication (eg naproxen or ibuprofen-if you can use these), may help but if there is no improvement or the pain is severe , then you should see your doctor for assessment
I hope this helps
