What Causes Swelling And Pain In Eyelid While Opening Or Closing The Eye?

Hi there, My brother got hit with a plastic object in his eye. The top eye lid is bruised, swollen and the eyeball is red on the outside corner where it was hit. He feels pain when opening/closing the eye. We used some eye polysporin as well as visin in his eye. Would you suggest to wait and see how it is like tomorrow to determine whether he needs to see a doctor or this is something serious which should be dealt with immideately ? Thanks

Hello,

Swelling and pain in the the eyelid happens when fluid collects in the tissues around your eye. It can be due to infection or injury. Do continue to apply Visine eye drops, it will help to clear away the redness. Polysporin eye drops will help to reduce any infection in the eye. You may have itching or pain also but avoid touching or scratching your eyes.

In case of dry eyes, use of artificial tears will help to keep your eyes moist. You can take acetaminophen, one stat after food to help reduce swelling, soreness, inflammation and pain in the eyes. He should give the eyes rest. Cold compress may be helpful. If your brothers vision is affected and the symptoms are persistent, he is advised to get clinically examined by an eye specialist, he will be treated accordingly.
