What Causes Swelling And Pain In Fingers?

My dad s left (non-dominant) hand has been swollen for the last two to three days. He is in a fair amount of pain. Even his fingers are swollen (had to take off his wedding ring). Ice makes it feel better, but the swelling just won t go away. He is 81 and active (rides bike every day) and takes meds - Benezapril - for high blood pressure. He is sleeping more than usual and feels cold even on a hot, humid day.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Swelling and pain in the fingers with history of high blood pressure indicates issue with peripheral circulation most likely. The probable lesion can be related to vasospasm from various causes such as Reynaud's phenomenon or others. A detailed physical examination for:
- Sensations
- Peripheral pulses
- Ankle brachial pressure index (ABPI)
- Motor tone and reflexes
- Doppler ultrasound of the upper limb vessels

If any of the reports are available with you, kindly share with me during follow up discussion for further guidelines.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
