What Causes Swelling And Pain In Jaw?

More times than I like to count, my left jaw, just below the ear swells, gets hard and hurts like crazy. Sometimes it lasts just a minute or 2, sometimes hours. I personally thought it was TMJ, but was told years ago that it was not. A doctor did give me a name, but I have forgotten it, but would probably remember it if I heard it .Need info as I am going to get on osteoprosis medicine. Can you help with the name?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

As per your query you have swelling and pain below your ear ,well this is swelling of your salivary gland the condition is known as sialadenitis .The swelling occurs due to bacterial or viral infection.

I would suggest you to consult doctor ,because sometimes it can lead to certain complication like spread of infection to surroundings.Doctor can order CTscan and MRI to detect that.Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics for bacterial infection.

For now what you can do is drink plenty of water ,put warm compresses on affected area,do warm saline rinses and gentle massage can also give relief.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
get well soon.

Best Wishes,
