What Causes Swelling And Pain In Knee?

My mother is 84 years old and has swelling and pain that travels between both legs, behind the knees specifically. She has had an mri on left leg to rule out blood clot. No clot. That was the only leg that hurt at the time. She was placed on a water pill, swelling has gone down some, but now a week later the pain in more predominate in the right leg. I worry about congestive heart failure. Your thought?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello hope my answer satisfies your concerns for your mother. As you told she is an elderly lady with both leg swelling intermittently that a clot in deep venous system has been excluded by imaging study.Yes your concerns as limb swelling can be due to multiple reasons as especially congestive RT sided heart failure,Renal disease nephrotic syndromeor any hepatic disease leading to excess fluid accumalation in interstitial space and presenting as edema, for this you need to consult medical specalist to rule out.As presently with pain also if dull only with no local reddness or temperature increased there donot worry limb elevation and water pills help but if red then needs antibiotic to control infection and urgent consultation with physician or surgeon.
