What Causes Swelling And Pain In Middle Finger?

have a forein body (wood splinter) in middle finger right hand. Swelling and pain . No fever or vomiting. Occurred 1/09/15 at approx 8:30 p.m. Swelling and pain began around 11:00 am 1/10/15. attempted to remove object with serilized needle to no avail. No streaks on arm but worrie about infection. What steps do I take?
