What Causes Swelling And Pain In Nail Due To Hole Near Cuticle?

I somehow got a hole in my fingernail right near the cuticle. THe nailbed is swollen and painful. It has been more than a week. I went to my Dr. and she never saw anything like it and couldn t do anything. It is painful, I don t think it is infected but I need the swelling to go down or my nail will be damaged and won t grow back. What can I do?

Hi,
Thanks for the query.
The condition you are referring to is probably infection of the nail bed. It is because the nailbed got exposed to water through the hole. You need to take oral antibiotics like amoxycillin-Clavulanate and analgesics for the same. The nailbed should be cleaned with appropriate antiseptic like povidine iodine solution and the nail area should be covered with a dressing to avoid exposure to water. Consult a nearby dermatologist for initial cleaning and dressing.
