What Causes Swelling And Pain In The Navel With Discharge?

When I woke up this morning I felt a stinging pain coming from my belly button and when I went to look, there was slight blood and pus coming from it. I took a flash light to look closer to what was wrong and the inside of my belly button seemed to be swollen and itchy. I managed to look deeper and I noticed bleeding pink flesh. This hasn t happened to me before and I was wondering what it is?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for writing to HCM.
I understand your concern.
Swelling, pain and discharge of blood and pus from nevus clearly indicates infection little deeper of the skin. Pink flesh what you have seen is a good sign and it is granulation tissue.
You need to wash the area with mild antiseptic like Savlon twice a day. Apply Neomycin skin cream following that after drying. Take Ibuprofen with Paracetamol combination tablet twice a day after food for 5 days. Also take Tablet. Amoxacillin with Clavulenic acid twice a day for 5 days.
Leave the wound open.
Your infection will subside and heal by drying in about a week time.
All the best.
