What Causes Swelling And Pain In The Toe?

Hi, I had EHL surgery in Juky. It was unsuccessful. I am currently getting a very swollen and sore big toe near the top and sides of the toe. It is also very sore. I am wondering if I have gotten a secondary infection, or possibly a firm of gout? I also have osteoarthritis. Advice? Thank you. pam_moe @hotmail.com

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service.
I have read your question and here is my advice.

You are very right, it can be gout or infection. Gout looks more likely here if its the big toe and swollen or if you have any such episodes before. However possibility of infection cannot be ruled out, generally with infection you may be very sick. Still it is a possibility, so I would advise you see your doctor to get tests done. If you have any suspicion of its being infected, then you must see doctor urgently.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
