What Causes Swelling And Pain On The Foot After Hitting With Heavy Weight?

Couple of years ago, I had a heavy object that fell on top of my foot. The ER dr said it was badly bruise, nothing is broken or anything. Is it normal to have a bump on my foot and still hurt when I push on it, or stand on my feet for most of the day? Would I need to have surgery to fix it or what else can I do?
