What Causes Swelling And Purple Discoloration On The Foot?

My mother is 87 and diagnosed with CHF and mitral valve regurgitation. Recently her feet, primarily the left foot, are swelling and turning purple. Does this indicate something I should do/watch for? Her PCP prescribed lasix (20 mg) and spironolactone (25 mg) as needed for ankle swelling. She leads a very sedentary life and sleeps most of the time. Next appt with PCP is a month away.
