What Causes Swelling And Redness Around The Thumb?

I fell on concrete yesterday and I used my left hand to protect my fall & of course, I fell on my thumb instead. Right now it is sore & tender around edge of nail and I can not apply much pressure to the tip. It is not crocked or deformed, but there is swelling and redness around the area...also throbs of & on...please advise
