What Causes Swelling And Redness At The Corners Of Mouth?

I have had repeated radiation to combat 2 bouts of cancer. one in 1997 and also in 2012. they occurred the nasal and pallet area. This has left me with dry mouth-I use Biotene mouth spray. In the resent weeks I have a puffy red area at the corners of my mouth. There is no soreness, I have used Vaseline or chap stick. It improved a little but today it is worse. How can I treat this?

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

As per your complain it seems that you are suffering from Angular Cheilitis leading to puffy red area at corners of the mouth and can occur due to a number of common causes like:
-Iron deficiency or Anaemia.
-Fungal infection.
-Dry mouth.
-Skin atrophy due to radiation etc..

I would suggest you to consult an Oral Physician/ Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and a microscopic examination of scrapings from the area can help in diagnosis..
You can continue to apply a thick coat of Petroleum jelly over the corners to relieve the dryness and smoothen the area..
Do cool compresses..
A low potency steroid ointment along with antibiotic ointment can also be advised..
Take multivitamin tablet for 15 days..
Drink plenty of water..
If there is dry mouth you can start instilling artificial saliva drops and also chew sugar free chewing gums for relief..

Hope this information helps..

Regards..
