What Causes Swelling And Redness In A Small Hole On Ear?

I have a small hole on the side of my face in front on my ear. Most of the time it is quiet, but every 6 mos it feels like it swells. When I squeeze it, firm white stuff comes out. It s not like normal puss. It is firm and comes out in a stream. Problem is, it never seems to empty. Then it shrinks back down and you can barely notice the hole. There is no redness or soreness until it starts to feel full again. It is nit a pimple or an acne cyst. What it is? I have had it for 20+ years. YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Small hole in the ear is a type of sinus tract under the skin. It may get infected to cause pus. It is called periauricular pit. Do not touch, scratch or pick. Get clinically examined by an ENT, you may need a course of oral antibiotics, like Augmentin to control the infection.

If abscess is formed your treating doctor may have to do a short clinical procedure of incision and drainage. You will be given the required conservative treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
