What Causes Swelling And Redness On The Big Toe?

My 13 year old son suddenly developed swelling, redness and pain at the base of his right big toe/ball of foot. This happened about 4 hours ago. He was fine all morning, then suddenly felt it. At first we thought it might be a spider bite, but there are no signs of a puncture site. He has bronchitis at the moment and has been taking mucinex for a couple days. We just saw doctor this morning and received antibiotics for bronchitis; however, the pain/swelling in his foot did not start until after we got home and before he took antibiotics. Thank you for any advice, Steve

Hi,

Sudden onset of pain and redness in big toe for no obvious reason is a typical presentation of gout. While for the time being, you can apply some heat pad or ice packing along with some OTC painkiller like Ibuprofen for the pain. He should be taken to doctor for proper assessment and management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
