What Causes Swelling And Redness On The Buttock Near The Anus?

Hi, I woke up 8 days ago with a bright red swelling on my lower right buttock adjacent to the anus. There was no pain at all but a large area apporx. 3 inches by 3 inces was quite swollen and bright red. I saw a doctor the following day who ruled out a perianal abscess as there was no pain. He prescribed Cephalexin to be taken 4 times daily for one week. The week has transpired, the redness is completely gone and most of the swelling is gone but the area still looks larger than it should be when compared to my left buttock. Again, no pain at all. What could possibly have caused this?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The definitive treatment of an abscess is incision and drainage of the area. This treatment combined with the antibiotics should effectively treat the infection.

The infection would cause residual scar formation in the area and this may be reason for the abnormal appearance that you are seeing.

It can take a few weeks for the area to return completely to normal even though the acute infection has resolved.

I hope this helps
