What Causes Swelling And Redness To The Chin With Cold Sores?

I have developed unilateral chin swelling today. I had pain there yesterday, but thought it was a zit. Today the swelling is spongy, my skin is weepy, red and painful on the right side . I have had intermittent diarrhea for the past 5 days-- but I thought I just ate something bad. And I have a resolving cold sore on my right bottom lip. I also have a history of a root canal on right bottom ( approx 1.5 years ago) which had a temporary crown. But I put off getting perm crown due to finances and eventually forgot about it. Now the temporary crown is clearly gone . That tooth is totally unprotected. I use mouth wash 2x/day as well as remove any food that May have gotten caught in it. I have not had fevers though. I have had intermittent severe hot flashes -- but chalked that up to side effect of antidepressant. I ve been more fatigued than usual -- but I haven t had the motivation to exercise at all lately-- so I figured I was causing my own fatigue. Also , I applied ice to my chin , and spongy swelling is still present but is not as prominent. Do you think these symptoms are coincidental and from separate etiologies ? Or do you think they might be related.? Do you think I should be evaluated urgently? Or do I just call to make an appointment w a dentist?

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hello,

Perhaps the swelling is a result of skin infection. I suggest you take a course of an oral antibiotic e.g either amoxicillin or cephalexin for a week.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
