What Causes Swelling And Tenderness In The Neck Along With Fatigue?

My 21 year old daughter has extreme fatigue, slight fever, and super swollen and sore neck. This is now day 3. Her throat isn t very sore (like Strep throat would cause), but the outside of her neck is getting more and more visible swollen, and very tender to the touch. Is this something that should be seen by a doctor or could it just be he flu?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic for your health concern

The symptoms your daughter is experiencing can either be due to bacterial infection like Strep throat or viral illness like infectious mono nucleosis (commonly called mono). It is important to undergo throat swan analysis and culture to rule out bacterial infection as it requires early initiation of antibiotics. Viral illness will subside on its own without any treatment. So please be advised to follow up with your primary care provider. Meanwhile, take Tylenol for pain and fever.

Hope this answers your questions
