What Causes Swelling And Tightness In Right Calf Muscle Long After A Knee Replacement?

My husband had a partial right knee replacement last October, and he has been doing just fine with walking, rehabbing, etc. However, today the calf of his right leg is very tight and swollen. He is diabetic and is on blood pressure meds. He also has restless leg syndrome and is on meds for that. He is elevating it, but should it be iced? Something else?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi.

Icing can go about during the first day, but from there on a heat compress is better. It could be a normal muscle cramp and nothing more. I would recommend rest, elevation, ice pack and a compression bandage if available.

Best wishes.
