What Causes Swelling Around The Jaw And Behind The Ear?

My son fell yesterday onto concrete and hit the side of his face pretty hard, today he his very swollen around his jaw and behind his ear. He claimed to have a horrible headache this morning but seems to be functioning as normal. Should I be overly concerned and take him to the Emergency room for xrays?

I have gone through your queryinflammatiojand can understand your concerns..
As per your complain swelling around the jaw along with headache after falling hard on face can be due to soft tissue swelling due to inflammation secondary to getting traumatic injury..
Headache can be radiating pain from the jaw while can also be due to mild concussion that have occurred due to hit..
Yes, You should take him to Emergency room or can also consult an Oral Surgeon who will evaluate him clinically for ruling out any jaw fractures by palpation and jaw movements and also take x rays for confirmation..
If needed an MRI scan can also be advised if headache does not improve or there is occurrence of any other symptoms..
As of now you can do cool compresses over the jaw..
Give anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen..
Take soft diet..
