What Causes Swelling Below The Left Knee?

Swelling in the lower right side of my left knee. Very painful when I try to bend my leg. When walking I seem not to be able to bend my knee for normal walking, and if I hit anything with my foot a shooting pain occurs in my whole leg, especially my knee. I had a hard fall on my knee last year but it never effected me until recently

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I believe you may have bursitis.
-is your knee red or inflamed?
-do you have fever?
-any odd clicking noises while you try to bend your knee?
-how old are you?
-any recent cold or any other infection?

I recommend -
-an orthopedic consult
-xray of the knee joint, if necessary an MRI (if tissue structure is involved)
-blood tests (complete blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, uric acid)

Based on the above I can help you further.
Ice the area Intermittently for about 15 minutes every 2 hrs to help relieve pain and Inflammation.
Tylenol or ibuprofen can help ease the pain till you see your doctor.
Make sure you take medications after a meal.

Keep weight off the affected leg and a keep it elevated at it above hip level. Hope this helps.
Wish you good health
