What Causes Swelling In Ankle And Lower Leg Post Hernia Surgery?

Hello - I had hernia surgery last month. It was outpatient. Surgeon found 3 hernias on the left side. All went well and have been recovering. However, when I returned for my post operation appointment I told the surgeon about my left lower part of my leg and ankle was really swollen. She told me to elevate it and put hot and cold compress. I still have the problem. Have contacted my primary doctor and have an appointment to see him in 2 weeks. I am taking thyroid and high blood pressure medication. My left side above my thigh is still numb. Can you answer as to what you might think it is? Thank you. Olga

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Swelling in one leg and ankle after a surgery is very concerning for a deep vein thrombosis (blood clot). I would not wait two weeks to check this out. I suggest you go to emergency today for evaluation today. This could be serious, do not delay.
Regards
