What Causes Swelling In Ankle?

I broke my fifth metatarsal about 7 years ago, it didn't heal and finally required surgery. The surgeon told me the bone was splintered and he had to remove some bone and put a clip into place. All was fine until about 3 weeks ago when my foot started bothering me. It is not a severe pain more of a discomfort, but now I am getting swelling in my ankle and where in incision was made and having a dull ache in the area. Could that clip have come loose? I have a physical scheduled in August, if the symptoms don't get any worse, should I just wait until then to discuss with my Dr? Thank you
