What Causes Swelling In Ankles, Pain Around Stomach And Behind Knee?

Hi, my name is Cheryl....I have back problems, I have had 2 back surgeries. My last surgery I had a fusion 0n L4-L5. I have buldging discs in my back still and have been on disability for 6 years. I have been seeing a back and spine Dr. for quite some time now. I have had back injections multiple times and they haven t worked at all. My right leg has a pinched nerve but lately (in the past 2 months) the pain has got worse. It feels like around my thigh I have a belt of band of some sort so tight it kills me and I also feel the same pain around my knee to the back of my knee. Sometimes at the top of my thigh it hurts so much to the touch, also my ankle swells up. What do you think it could be? I m afraid of a blood clot.

Hi,

Based on your symptoms, there are a few possible causes for your pain and swelling. One possibility is a blood clot, as you mentioned, which is a serious condition which requires immediate medical attention. Other possible causes include:
* Nerve compression: Your symptoms suggest that you may have a pinched nerve in your thigh, which could be causing the band-like pain you are experiencing.
* Sciatica: If your pain is radiating down your leg, you may have sciatica, which is a condition that affects the sciatic nerve.
* Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is a condition that causes joint pain and stiffness, and can affect the knee and ankle joints.
* Peripheral artery disease: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a condition that occurs when there is a blockage or narrowing of the arteries that supply blood to the legs. This can cause pain and swelling in the legs and ankles.

It is important to consult with your doctor about your symptoms, especially if you are concerned about a blood clot. Your doctor may order imaging tests such as an ultrasound or MRI to help diagnose the cause of your symptoms. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause and may include medication, physical therapy, or surgery.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
