Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Dr., I have some swelling in my ankles lately. I ve used a lot of salt over the years, but it never seemed to affect my health or blood pressure. I m a young almost 69 and otherwise am healthy and I work out regularly. Thank you for your assistace. Jane
Hello and welcome to HCM, Swelling of ankles can be due to systemic causes like high blood pressure, cardiac disease or local condition affecting the ankles. I suggest you to consult a cardiologist and assess the blood pressure and the cardiac system. In case no abnormality is detected in cardiac system you are advised to consult an orthopedician. Swelling around the ankles can be due to inflammation of joint surfaces leads to accumulation of fluid in joint spaces. Thus, clinical assessment and relevant investigations are required before a diagnosis and thus management can be done.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
