What Causes Swelling In Feet And Ankles?

This morning, while I was dressing, I noticed that my feet, both of them, were swollen. I didn t have any pain, and assumed it was from wearing flip-flops too much for the nice weather. Tonight I realized my ankles are also swollen. Both feet and both ankles feel like the skin is burning, yet neither is red. My ankles are twice their normal size, and it s becoming difficult to balance to walk. I ve tried a epsom salt soak and ice packs, ate a bowl of sour cherries, (at my neighbours insistence), and put a topical anti-allergy cream on, all to no avail so far.

Hello,

You are experiencing swelling in both your feet and ankles due to excessive walking or standing for long hours, water retention, rubber / plastic allergy, etc. You can take antihistamines, Fexofenadine (Allegra), once daily for 3 (three) days. Keep your foot raised on a stool when sitting and on a pillow when on bed to help reduce swelling. Cut on salty, junk food and addictions if any. Cut on your salt intake.

Cold compress will give relief. Avoid walking, rest for a couple of days. Drink plenty of water. Wear support stockings to ease out the discomfort. However, you are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP as the symptom may be indicative of heart, liver or kidney disease. Drink plenty of water. If obese, maintain healthy BMI. Take adequate sleep. Get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
