What Causes Swelling In Foot And Ankles?

i am 59 year old female, work on my feet 45 hours a week, 10 hour days.. my feet and ankles are swelling to about 3-4 times normal size.. swelling goes down when elevated or by morning.. when swollen if ankle or foot rests against anything you will see deep impressions in skin so i know its fluid.. both swell but left foot is more severe.. have developed a reddish color around shins going up about 5 inches on both sides.. this last week have developed a extremely itchy bumpy rash around the reddened area what could cause this?

Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
Swollen foot and ankles could be caused by many medical conditions. Some possible may include:
-Heart pathologies
-Kidney pathologies
-Liver pathologies
-Local foot/soft tissue infection
-Poor venous drainage due to obstruction or venous insufficiency
There are just many possible causes.I will suggest you see the Doctor for evaluation and work-ups.You will need tests a chest x ray, ECG, liver and kidney function test, urinalysis, doppler ultrasound of legs.
From the results, treatment options may be discussed. In the meantime, i will advise you try the following:
*Rest well
*Reduce salt intake
*Take a diuretic like furosemide
*Elevate legs while lying.
From the results of the test, more objective treatment may be prescribed by your Doctor.
Hope this will help
Best regards
