What Causes Swelling In Head And Neck In A Deaf Person?

I have a very good friend who is deaf. She is in her early twenties. She has been having severe headach and neck pain for about six weeks now. She did go to a doctor, he has put her on pain meds, an anti-inflamitory meds. She is scheduled for an MRI on the tenth of July. She woke up today and her head and neck are swollen, she is in a lot of pain. My problem is I am trying to get her to go to the ER or at least inform her Dr. of the swelling. She does not want to do either one, she wants to wait until her appointment time, then tell her Dr. Any suggestions? Faye Brown

Hello! I read your question and understand your concern.
Bilateral neck edema and head edema can be caused by many serious disorders. I would like to know if she has fever as an infection may cause this situation. I would mention chorizo meningitis or a diffuse infection of the subcutaneous tissue or a mediastinal tumor that compresses the vena cava superior (the main vein of head and upper limbs), sarcoidosis etc.
I think the situation may be more serious and you should bring her to the GP and have some tests. A full blood work would be necessary to exclude infection. She needs further test to establish the cause and the proper treatment.
